Campaign to Protect Sears Island Information Event and Organizing Convergence

Sunday March 24, 2024

Maine EarthFirst!, a collective of groups and individuals dedicated to protecting the environment using any means necessary, will be hosting a public information event and organizing convergence for everyone committed to protecting Sears Island (Wahsumkik) from industrial development.  The event will feature speakers Steve Miller and friends to educate the public about the recent announcement by Governor Mills to develop an Off Shore Wind Port on Sears Island, and promote the facts of a Mack Point Alternative.  Following the speakers, attendees will be invited to organize themselves by interest into groups to work together to protect the island from development.

Event Details:

  • What: Public Information Event and Organizing Convergence

  • When: March 24, 2024 from 2 to 5pm

  • Where: American Legion Hall, Belfast

  • Who Should Attend: Any person or organization that cares about the future of Sears Island (Wahsumkik)

“Wahsumkik, commonly known as Sears Island, is the Crown Jewel of Searsport.  It is the largest undeveloped island off the coast of Maine, enjoyed for free by tens of thousands of locals and visitors every year.  The island is historically and ecologically significant.  Off shore wind can come to Searsport and be built by union labor at Mack Point for less overall cost, less controversy, and still support the Governor’s clean energy goals.”-Chris Buchanan, Searsport resident
