The Maine Labor Climate Council has retained services of Greenlight America, a firm
dedicated to “green lighting” renewable energy projects across the country. MLCC has
been pulling strings to pass LD 2266, a bill that would eliminate protections for a sand
dune on Sears Island and pave the way for developing the Island, a move that is deeply
unpopular with locals who either favor using Mack Point, or no development at all.
Greenlight America is a national non-profit working to ensure renewable energy projects
meet little resistance. In this case they are bypassing environmental protections, which
throws scalding water in the face of a ‘just transition’ from fossil fuels to clean energy.
This partnership is to ensure that “Maine Won’t Wait” for proper environmental impact
studies, reviews, or assessments.
No environmental assessments for Sears Island have been released, but Governor
Mills, in conjunction with the AFL-CIO and environmental groups like Natural Resources
Council of Maine, already announced it as the “preferred site” for the offshore wind port.
The people of Maine deserve a transparent and accountable process, and bypassing
environmental protections in the name of “green energy” not only sets a dangerous
precedent, it is in direct opposition to the principles of the Intergovernmental Panel on
Climate Change, whose report states that retaining intact ecosystems are more useful
in curbing harmful changes in our climate than wind projects.
